The Spectators is a large-scale stained glass work for VIERNULVIER, realised in collaboration with Group Monument.
Central to the work is the interaction between looking and being looked at. The figures seem to be spectators and look at you. Not to confront, but to draw you into the story.
Just like the visitors of VIERNULVIER, they are part of something that is constantly in motion, a place where people come together, celebrate, disappear into the night and find each other without judgement.
During the day everything is visible, open. In the evening it becomes softer, more intimate, almost anonymous.
The Spectators is not about who looks and who is looked at.
It is about being present together, and being allowed to simply exist, next to each other.

Take me to church
In these works, Sanderjan presents male figures in a pose that seems toseduce. Secretly, they pull up a garment, or they are dressed in items that relate to their fetish.
There is a great contrast between the theme of these works and the form of the work. The typical arch used in church windows gives the work its shape. These works have a break edge that is also used in church windows.
In the church, male figures in art are often glorified for their devotion. Sanderjan breaks with this norm by showing men in their "sin."
